The United Steel Workers has formally requested that the oil refinery industry re-open the National Oil Bargaining pattern agreement to negotiate increased health and safety provisions. USW Vice-President Gary Beevers.
[Beevers]: “Last year there were 45 refinery fires. In the first five months of 2010 there were 28 refinery fires. That’s giving us about a fire a week. e can’t continue like that.”
As if the Gulf Coast wasn’t being hit hard enough with jobs being lost due to both the economy and the BP Oil Spill, a major coastal employer announced on Tuesday it would be laying off 15 percent of its workforce. Jesse Russell reports:

[Yvonne Walker]: “This is a bad move and it’s a definite attack on working people. I think everybody – not just state workers but everybody – needs to stand up and say enough.”
