Trade Unions Protest Honduran Military Coup Anniversary With General Strike- 06/29/10

Honduran National Popular Resistance Movement labor activist Fabia Gutierrez told Workers Independent News as many as two million people were expected to participate in a general strike in Honduras Monday to protest the military coup that took power one year ago. Unions have been in active in ongoing marches and protests against the government. Gutierrez says 118 opponents of the coup, including many trade unionists, have been assassinated in the past year.

NYC Ironworkers Local Leader Bob Ledwith: U.S. Needs Strategic Infrastructure Plan And Serious Funding- 06/29/10

New York City labor leader Bob Ledwith of Metallic Lathers & Reinforcing Ironworkers Local 46 says the U.S. needs a strategic vision for the nation’s infrastructure. He believes government has a positive role to play in it. And it will require a bigger economic stimulus focused on funding vital infrastructure projects.

Los Angeles School District Budget Cuts Endanger Another 2,500 Jobs- 06/29/10

The already short staffed Los Angeles Unified School District is looking down the barrel of more layoffs as a solution to close a massive budget deficit. Jesse Russell reports:

On Tuesday, LA Unified Board members approved a new budget that could see 2500 clerical workers out of a job. That includes library aids and others. Senior office technician Connie Borja is already over worked.

[Borja]: It’s a very unstable feeling, I feel very stressed not knowing if I’m going to have enough money to support my son.

The district is facing a $640 million deficit.
