Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is calling 10,000 city workers to take a 10 percent pay cut. The Mayor said on Monday that all of his appointees will also be making the same sacrifice. The mayor told union leaders on Monday that the city is on the verge of bankruptcy. Even if the 10,000 unionized workers take the pay cut, 1,000 workers will be laid off. According to the Detroit News, the mayor said the city could end up in receivership as early as October if a deal can’t be reached. The mayor gave the unions until August 28 to respond. Some of the pay cuts will come through 26 unpaid furlough days spread throughout the year. Three hundred eighty-one workers have been laid off in Detroit since May.
