pIn December of 2005, subway and bus drivers represented by the Transport Workers Union of America walked off the job for 60 hours when they failed to reach an agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. New York Union Workers Protest Governor’s Budget – 01/08/09

January 7th, 2009 No comments

pBy Doug Cunningham/p
pThousands of workers rallied in New York’s state capital Wednesday for a March for Main Street. Organized by the the New York state AFL-CIO and several unions including SEIU, AFSCME, CSEA, New York State Nurses Association and the Public Employees Federation, the march drew 6,000 workers protesting New York Governor Dabid Paterson’s budget proposal. Ken Brynien is President of the Public Employees Federation./p
p[Brynien]: “This is happening all over the country. The unions are being asked for concessions, workers are being asked to give up things. In a period of time when people are losing their homes and their jobs and their pensions, I don’t think the way to fix the state or the country is to ask for those people that are in the process of losing all this stuff to give up more. We’ve got to find ways to bring in money that don’t hit a second and third time the same people that are suffering./p
