OMG. A labor secretary who might look out for workers?
As an op-ed in today’s Los Angeles Times makes clear, President-elect Barack Obama’s selection of Rep. Hilda Solis as secretary of labor is too terrible to contemplate. “A Disastrous Pick for Labor Secretary,” shouts the headline by author Bret Jacobson, who tries to terrify readers by [...]

pThe Teamsters are sending organizers from the international union to help Local 120 in Minneapolis in a campaign to organize MRI – a consortium of thirteen waste-hauling companies. The local won a neutrality agreement with MRI thanks to the Minneapolis city labor peace ordinance. The ordinance requires contractors to sign collective bargaining agreements when the city has a proprietary interest in uninterrupted delivery of services. In exchange for a no-strike pledge, MRI has signed an agreement that calls for neutrality during the organizing campaign. The agreement also allows for recognition of the union when a majority of workers sign union authorization cards./p

pEconomist Dean Baker says that while mistaken business decisions have played a role in the current financial crisis of the U.S. auto industry, they are not responsible for bringing the companies to the brink of bankruptcy. Baker says the Detroit Three are not responsible for the broken U.S. health care system that adds roughly $1600 to the cost of every U.S. built vehicle. And that health care cost really adds up, Baker says if GM were a Canadian company it would have made $22 billion more money over the last decade thanks to Canada’s single-payer national health care system./p

pThe progressive think tank, Mobility Agenda, is out with a report on community benefits agreements that says these agreements are transforming thousands of low-wage jobs into good, living wage jobs in communities across the nation. These agreements between developers and labor/community coalitions on p[rojects that use some public finding are legally binding and designed to boost wages and stregthen local labor markets. Mobility Agenda’s Margy Waller says these community benefits agreements will become more important than ever as public investments in various projects increase substantially. In announcing the task force Obama said his administration will be absolutely committed to the future of America’s middle-class and working families. The AFL-CIO welcomes and applauds the decision to form the task for/p
David Brody is professor emeritus of labor history with the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at the University of California-Berkeley. I wanted to pass along Brody’s great comments to a recent Wall Street Journal opinion column by Richard Epstein, which claims that the Employee Free Choice Act is unconstitutional.

We know how the bridge loan to automakers is being spent because the Bush administration made sure they only got aid after agreeing to tough stipulations.
So that accounts for $14.5 billion of our taxpayer money. But what about the rest of the $335.5 billion that went to Wall Street financial firms?
On “Morning Joe,” Joe Scarborough [...]
So many potential Grinches, but only one top Grinch spot to fill. So voters in the Jobs with Justice (JwJ) ninth annual Grinch of Year contest picked the entire lot of Wall Street executives whose unchecked corporate greed led to our nation’s economic disaster.
Each December, voters in the Grinch of the Year contest tap the [...]
