pIt took 15 years, but workers at the world’s largest hog processing plant have finally won union representation. The United Food and Commercial Workers made the announcement late on Thursday. The win came after years of the UFCW alleging that the only reason they lost a similar vote in 1997 was due to worker intimidation by Smithfield. In 2006, the United States Court of Appeals agreed that the company had taken part in “intense and widespread” coercion of employees. In October of this year the UFCW agreed to stop a campaign against the company if the Smithfield would drop a lawsuit against the union on racketeering charges./p
