States Hire More People To Process Jobless Claims – 12/12/08

December 11th, 2008 No comments

pWith a consistent stream of mass layoff announcements there is at least one organization that is hiring. Jesse Russell reports:/p
pThe announcement of jobs being made available is rarely a reason for despair, but with more and more companies announcing job cuts each day, state unemployment offices across the country are opening up new jobs to deal with an increase in claimants. Pennsylvania is one of those states that has been forced to hire more employees to deal with the increase of claimants. The state hired 81 more employees in the month of November and they have been dealing with a 41 percent increase in unemployment benefit filings over the same time last year. /p

December 11th, 2008 No comments

pBy Doug Cunningham/p
pA week of dozens of “People’s Bailout” protest actions is continuing across the country. Ricardo Valadez of Jobs With Justice says there’s growing momentum for real reforms to benefit workers. He says the Chicago sitdown strike victory is a powerful message that unified action can win for workers./p
p[Valadez]: “I think momentum is building and I think the Chicago sitdown – and the victory there – really just kind of reminded everyone, reminded workers everywhere, you know, what can be done when workers are organized – that we can win, even in hard economic times.”/p

Efforts Continue On Auto Loans As Senate GOP Obstructs The Industry’s Lifeline – 12/12/08

December 11th, 2008 No comments

pBy Doug Cunningham/p
pEfforts are still underway on Capitol Hill to come up with a bipartisan compromise on the emergency loans to the auto industry. Senate Republicans are attacking the union wages and benefits of UAW members working for the Detroit Three. They are blocking the loans until enough punishment is inflicted upon the UAW. It’s a striking class contrast to the way the Wall Street banking and insurance bailout was handled. A U.S. Senate vote on the loans could come very soon./p
