Janesville GM Workers Vote on Local Contract in Shadow of Plant Closure – 08/22/08

August 21st, 2008 No comments

With their plant on the GM chopping block, autoworkers in Janesville, Wisconsin are making a more important than usual contract vote today. The union and the company have been negotiating for 14 months and finally reached a tentative local contract deal on Tuesday. Local contracts often deal with seniority rights, job classifications, job training, and grievances at the plant. The plant is set to be mothballed in 2010, but terms in the contract could make the plant more appealing to General Motors management. Wisconsin Governor, Jim Doyle has been trying to find ways to keep the plant operating, even if under very limited production.
