Arizona homeowners are one step closer to being protected from shoddy construction and building defects after a state judge ruled the Homeowners’ Bill of Rights initiative could remain on the November ballot.
The measure (Proposition 201), sponsored by the Sheet Metal Workers (SMWIA) and strongly backed by the Arizona AFL-CIO, would create a “Bill of Rights” for Arizona homeowners. It would provide a 10-year warranty on new homes. In addition, homeowners would have the right to demand that the builder either correct construction defects or compensate the homeowner. Homeowners also could participate in the selection of contractors to perform the repair work.
We all know America’s health care system is broken and that reforming it to provide quality, affordable care for all is a top priority for voters this fall and for the new president and Congress in January.
A new study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) shows that a key component of John McCain’s health care plan—which would push working families into the private insurance market—falls far, far short of what retirees would need to cover their premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.
Meanwhile, a new coalition launched a call-in campaign to find out how members of Congress will vote on health care in the new session.

Working America, the AFL-CIO community affiliate, has added thousands of new members in Wisconsin this year—including a U.S. senator.
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) signed up as a Working America member at an economic briefing last week in Milwaukee, where he talked about how working families are experiencing job losses and other economic problems more and more acutely.
I’ve held over a thousand listening sessions—I held one this morning in Kenosha—and you can probably guess the questions I’ve heard over and over again in every corner of the state. How will I keep my job? How will I keep my house? Why can’t I afford to fill my gas tank or keep my health insurance anymore?
Two more unions have endorsed Barack Obama for president—the Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Seafarers (SIU).
The IAFF made its endorsement yesterday at the union’s 49th annual convention, held this week in Las Vegas. The union has launched a new website, Fire Fighters for Obama, to inform members about where Obama stands on key issues like bargaining, overtime pay, health care and the economy.
Harold Schaitberger, president of IAFF, said Obama has always supported firefighters. He pointed to Obama’s co-sponsorship in the U.S. Senate of a bill to protect collective bargaining rights as a key reason for the endorsement.
On every issue important to firefighters, Sen. Obama is and has been in our corner. We support those who support us. We can’t overlook Sen. [John] McCain’s service to our country, but we also can’t overlook his poor record on issues critical to the financial security of our 290,000 members.
