By Doug Cunningham

A California judge is temporarily barring SEIU members and SEIU President Andy Stern from following, threatening or stalking “officers, directors and staff” of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee. Judge Jon Rantzman is having SEIU appear in court May 1 to consider a three-year injunction.

The California Superior Court temporary injunction prohibits SEIU and its president, Andy Stern, from following or threatening CNA/NNOC staff, officers or directors at work, in hospitals, clinics, offices and homes.

The CNA says SEIU members had come to the homes of at least five CNA board members unannounced. CNA says they pounded on doors, yelled and pointed cameras at CNA members.

Equal Pay Day to Spotlight Pay Equity Legislation

April 16th, 2008 UnionGuy No comments

It’s been 45 years since equal pay became the law, but working women still are not paid as much as men for the same work, even though recent statistics indicate they are better educated. As Equal Pay Day approaches, union members, women’s rights and civil rights advocates are joining together to make sure women are paid their fair wage.

Equal pay advocates are mobilizing to urge the Senate to pass the Fair Pay Restoration Act (S. 1843), also known as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The bill would restore the ability of U.S. workers to sue for pay discrimination. The House passed the legislation in July 2007, and the Senate is expected to take it up next week.

Union Members Tell McCain: Don’t Tax Our Benefits!

Yael Foa
On April 15, union members in Pittsburgh were among activists across the country pointing out that McCain would tax our health care benefits.

Yesterday, John McCain made a speech intended to address the economic crisis, one that offered almost nothing for struggling working families, but quite a lot for the corporate elites who have reaped the rewards from the Bush years.

What McCain left out of his economic proposals was any real solution to the problems facing America’s working families. All the Republican presidential candidate has offered so far are billions in tax cuts for the very wealthiest, along with a health care plan that would actually tax workers’ benefits. As the Wall Street Journal noted today, McCain has not only switched positions to support Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, he’s gone even further.

UAW, French Union Form Global Partnership

April 16th, 2008 UnionGuy No comments

In our global economy, workers increasingly are recognizing the value of international partnerships to better balance the power of multinational corporations that operate facilities in many countries.

To create a stronger presence in the international auto industry, the UAW and the Fédération des Travailleurs de la Métallurgie (FTM-CGT) of France recently began developing a joint global strategy on organizing common employers. The two unions have agreed to share information and assist each other in their respective efforts.

Cheers for Clinton, Obama; Boos for McCain at Building Trades Meeting

BCTD

The 3,000-plus union leaders and activists at the AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD) National Legislative Conference had plenty to cheer about when Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) pledged their support for rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, workers’ freedom to join unions and other key working family priorities.

They also had plenty to boo about when Obama and Clinton peeled back the mask that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has used to disguise his proposals on the economy and more—revealing the face of President Bush’s failed and flawed policies that have brought the nation economic chaos, out-of-reach health care and record gasoline prices.

What is Causing the U.S. Retirement Crisis?

April 16th, 2008 UnionGuy No comments

Lede: The U.S. retirement crisis is being caused by a shortage of worker political power, not by a lack of corporate cash. Doug Cunningham reports.

By Doug Cunningham

American workers are facing a pension crisis that could plunge them into retirement poverty. Dave Cohen, of the United Electrical Workers says just half of U.S. workers have pension plans. Most of those are 401k’s that don’t provide nearly enough retirement money. Cohen says workers earn good pensions and corporations have more than enough money to pay for them.

[Cohen]: “The money is there. We look at ExxonMobil, right, $40 billion profit in a quarter. Corporate America is making lots of money. They don’t want to give it to workers.”
